Obsessions: One Kings Lane

When I bought my house two years ago, I was daunted by the prospect of filling 2,000 square feet with stuff. Well, not just “stuff,” but pretty and aesthetically-pleasing, matched, probably expensive, uh … furnishings.

One day I stumbled on a little website that has changed my life, and my home (and has seriously altered my bank and credit card balances).

The obsession is One Kings Lane. It’s a subscription-only website (like Gilt, the Foundary, etc.) for home stuff — prints, furniture, kitchen tools, bedding, etc., all at majorly reduced prices.

I’ve found some amazing deals, like my crown tea towels, a canvas NYC subway sign, a digital food scale, a Japanese tea cup set, a glass beverage server.

Plus, I’ve found really unique presents, like the sterling-silver dog salt & pepper shakers I gave last Christmas. (They’re really cute, I promise!)

Because I never have time to actually physically enter a store, shopping online has been a godsend. The sales start at 11 a.m. ET every day, and with increasing publicity about this website, the competition is becoming more and more cutthroat. I mean, you need to be online at 11:01 sometimes or things sell out! Sheesh.

But it’s worth it, and the competition to find the best items is almost like a game. I even set an Outlook reminder, because I WILL BUY those gold-studded, all natural candlesticks before you do!

Okay, maybe not those. But I always find something I like, and I think the website is well-designed and easy to use. When I’ve had any trouble with my orders, like missing or damaged items in shipments, customer service has always been very personal and generous with making good. I think that’s rare these days.

If you’re still in need of a Christmas gift and don’t quite know what to buy, check out One Kings Lane. You might find something really unique to give as a present … or just to keep for yourself.
